When MTV announced that Britney Spears would be opening the Video Music Awards by performing her new single, “Gimme More,” members of her fanbase felt confident that the performance would put her back in the spotlight for her music instead of her tabloid antics. Even MTV seemed to feel rather confident about Britney’s performance, since they actually announced her opening performance a couple of days before the broadcast.
When Britney took the stage on Sunday night, the first thing the audience noticed was the outfit, or relative “lack of outfit,” that she chose to wear. This was followed by Britney’s “performance,” described by a number of people as being lethargic, and consisting of poor lip-synching and weak choreography. A lot of reports said that Britney’s backup dancers seemed to have more energy and enthusiasm than the star herself.
By the end of her performance, the live audience, as well as many of the television viewers at home, were left wondering just what exactly they just witnessed. Was this a performance, or had they just witnessed a trainwreck?
Some of the media reports referred to Britney as looking “fat” and “out of shape” in her outfit. As a mother of three, I can say that Britney is far from “fat” after having two babies; however, perhaps, she should have thought about how her post-pregnancy body would look in that outfit, especially when trying to perform choreography. All I know is, with how much flab I’ve accumulated after three pregnancies, I wouldn’t want to try to squeeze myself into the outfit Britney wore for the performance… much less dance on a stage in front of millions of people in that outfit.
In my opinion, I don’t think it looked good that Britney couldn’t lip-sync her own song. Perhaps she was nervous, but she’s been doing the lip-syncing routine for years, so one would think she would be a pro at this by now. Her dance “routine” looked like she either hadn’t rehearsed enough, or had taken some kind of substance (alcohol or drugs) that was affecting her balance.
Will this performance hurt the performance of Britney’s single at radio? Looking at current numbers, it does appear the bullet is starting to slow down; however, it doesn’t appear to be a drastic decrease, so this could be a natural slowdown and not an effect brought on by Britney’s VMA performance.
In the end, only time will tell whether or not this performance will help or hurt the performance of “Gimme More” on radio, or whether it will have any impact when her album drops on November 13.
I think it’s only a matter of time before Britney runs over a photographer and kills ‘em. What happened to that sweet old Britney we used to know and love?
