Ian Curtis Biopic Getting Limited Release

Control, a biopic about Ian Curtis from Joy Division, will come out in limited release on October 10. The film has already been shown at various film festivals, where director Anton Corbijn received three honors.
The film, shot in black and white, focuses on Ian Curtis’ early marriage and bouts of epilepsy. The seizures are presented as a major reason for his suicide, especially considering the side effects of his medication, often mixed with alcohol.
Matt Greenhalgh wrote the film, and he based the script off of the book Touching From a Distance (which was written by Curtis’ wife, Deborah Curtis). Sam Riley, who had a brief role in the film 24 Hour Party People (a film that chronicled the Manchester music scene of Joy Division), portrays Ian Curtis in Control. The music in the film was performed on-screen; Riley and a band played the music themselves, live for the camera.
