Rolling Stones to Release Album Through Universal

Posted by aeschtunes on January 17, 2008

The Rolling Stones, who are currently signed to EMI, will be releasing a soundtrack album for their upcoming concert film, Shine a Light, through Universal Music Group. This is a one album deal, and the soundtrack will be released in March. In Britain, the album will be released by Polydor Records.

Some people think this move does not look good for EMI Group, especially in the wake of Radiohead and Paul McCartney’s leaving that particular label. EMI, however, asserts that this deal does not affect their relationship with the Rolling Stones, because it’s understood that this is a one album deal. Also, EMI says that it makes sense for Universal to release the soundtrack, because the film is being produced by Universal Pictures.

Shine a Light is directed by Martin Scorsese, and was filmed during a Rolling Stones performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre in autumn 2006. The film opens at the Berlin Film Festival on February 7. It is expected that Shine a Light will be released to theaters sometime in April.
