  • Fred Milano, member of Dion and the Belmonts, passed away on January 1 at the age of 72 due to complications from lung cancer.
  • Bob Weston, former Fleetwood Mac guitarist, passed away on January 3 at the age of 64 from gastric intestinal hemorrhage, cirrhosis of the liver, and throat problems.
  • Jimmy Castor, funk and soul saxophonist, singer and songwriter, passed away on January 16 at the age of 71 from apparent heart failure.
  • Johnny Otis, white “godfather of rhythm and blues,” passed away on January 17 at the age of 90.
  • Winston Riley, reggae musician, passed away on January 19 at the age of 65 of complications from a gunshot wound to the head.
  • Etta James, blues singer, passed away on January 20 at the age of 73 from complications of leukemia.
  • Dick Kniss, bassist for Peter, Paul & Mary, passed away on January 25 at the age of 74 from pulmonary disease.
  • Clare Fischer, composer, arranger, conductor and pianist, passed away on January 26 at the age of 83 after suffering from a heart attack.
  • King Stitt, rap reggae pioneer, passed away on January 31 at the age of 72 after a long fight with prostate cancer and diabetes.
  • Leslie Carter, singer and sister of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, passed away on January 31 at the age of 25.
  • Don Cornelius, creator and host of “Soul Train,” passed away on February 1 at the age of 75 after committing suicide.
  • David Peaston, R&B singer, passed away on February 1 at the age of 54 of complications from diabetes.
  • Whitney Houston, iconic singer, passed away on February 11 at the age of 48.
  • Michael Davis, bassist for MC5, passed away on February 17 at the age of 68 from liver failure.
  • Christopher Reimer, guitarist for Women, passed away on February 21 at the age of 26.
  • Davy Jones, lead singer for The Monkees, passed away on February 29 at the age of 66 from a heart attack.
  • Ronnie Montrose, guitarist and founder of Montrose, passed away on March 3 at the age of 64 after battling prostate cancer.
  • Robert Sherman, Disney songwriter, passed away on March 5 at the age of 86.
  • James T. Ellis, singer of The Trammps, passed away on March 8 at the age of 74.
