Dewey Martin, the drummer for pioneer rock band Buffalo Springfield, was found dead February 1, 2009, in Van Nuys, California. The cause of death has not been determined.
Dewey formed Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, and Bruce Palmer in 1966. The group blended elements of country, folk, and rock. The group’s first single, 1967’s “For What It’s Worth,” became a top ten hit and a rock staple. However, that was the band’s only success, and the group broke up in 1968. The group recorded three albums, but none of them hit the top forty. However, Buffalo Springfield still had a heavy influence on the country-rock scene of the early 1970’s. Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
Martin had tried to keep the band’s name alive, and recruited members for the New Buffalo Springfield. However, both Young and Stills filed lawsuits which prevented the group from using the name. Later, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin played the oldiest circuit during the mid-80’s and early 90’s as Buffalo Springfield Revisited. Martin also formed other bands that had failed to catch on.
