Levi Stubbs, the frontman for the Four Tops, passed away on October 17 at the age of 72 in Detriot. Stubbs had been ill recently and died in his sleep.

The Four Tops began singing together in 1953, under the name of the Four Aims, and signed a deal with Chess Records. The group later changed their name to the Four Tops. They were also signed with Red Top, Riverside, and Columbia Records.

In 1963, the Four Tops signed with Motown Records and produced twenty Top 40 hits over a ten year period. The Four Tops’ best-known songs include: “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “Reach Out (I’ll Be There),” “Shake Me, Wake Me,” “Bernadette,” and “Standing in the Shadows of Love.” The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

In addition to performing with the Four Tops, Stubbs also provided the voice of Audrey II (the man-eating plant in the film Little Shop of Horrors) in 1986.
