George Strait Debuts at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 August 19, 2009

George Strait debuts at number one on the Billboard Top 200 album chart wih his latest album, Twang. The album sold 155,000 copies in its first week of release.

Neil Diamond’s Hot August Night/NYC debuts at number two. This Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club exclusive release sold 57,000 copies in its first week. Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D. moves back up one spot to number three, selling 45,00 copies (this is a 2% increase in sales from last week).

Cobra Starship’s Hot Mess debuts at number four, selling 42,000 copies in its first week of release. Kings of Leon’s Only By the Night holds steady at number five, selling 42,000 copies (this is a 6% decrease in sales).

The Now That’s What I Call Music Volume 31 compilation album falls four spots to number six, selling 38,000 copies (which is a 14% decrease in sales from last week). Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night holds steady at number seven, selling 38,000 copies; this is a 12% decrease in sales.

Daughtry’s Leave This Town falls two spots to number eight, selling 38,000 copies (this is a 14% decrease in sales from last week). Taylor Swift’s Fearless holds steady at number nine, selling 37,000 copies; this is less than a 1% decrease in sales. Justin Moore’s self-titled album debuts at number ten, selling 34,000 copies in its first week of release.

This week’s album sales (5.91 million units) are down 2.3% compared to last week, and down 19.6% compared to the same week last year.

George Strait debuts at the top of the Billboard Top 200 album chart with Troubadour, which sold 166,000 copies in its first week.

R.E.M. debuts at number two with Accelerate, which sold 115,000 copies. The Now 27 compilation album rises two spots to number three this week, selling 60,000 copies (however, this is a 11% sales decrease from last week).

Day26’s self-titled album falls three spots to number four, selling 51,000 copies (this is a 73% sales decline). The Alvin and the Chipmunks soundtrack shoots up eleven spots to number five, selling 51,000 copies (this is a 111% sales increase from last week).

Trina debuts at number six with Still Da Baddest, which sold 47,000 copies in its first week. Danity Kane’s Welcome to the Dollhouse falls three spots to number seven, selling 47,000 copies (which is a 47% sales decrease).

Counting Crows’ Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings falls five spots to number eight, selling 43,000 copies (this is a 59% sales decline from last week). Rick Ross’ Trilla slips three spots to number nine, selling 41,000 copies (which is a 20% sales decrease). Van Morrison debuts at number ten with Keep it Simple, which sold 37,000 copies in its first week.

This week’s album sales (7.99 million units) are down 3.5% compared to last week. And this number is down 24.5% compared to the same week in 2007.
