“Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” was released as a single from Crash Test Dummies’ God Shuffled His Feet. Without a doubt, “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” was the band’s biggest hit; it peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number one on Billboard‘s Modern Rock Tracks.
I know that as time has gone on, people have thought less and less of this song; it seems to frequently appear on “bad song” lists. While I would be the first to admit that “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” isn’t a great song, I don’t think it’s quite as bad as some of the people who make these lists seem to think it is.
The lyrics of “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” tells the story of three different kids; in each verse, the isolation of each child is described. Where two of the children suffer from isolation due to a physical abnormality, the third is the child of parents who attend a church where they “shake and lurch” on the church floor.
I’ve always liked the music video for this song. I thought the idea of setting the three verses as three one-act plays performed by kids was a clever idea.
