“Tender Lover” was the title song from Babyface’s 1989 album of the same name, and this song was released as the second single from the album. The song ended up peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
While Tender LoverTender Lover album at FYE and bought it. When I heard “Tender Lover” on the disc, it was the first time I had heard it in almost 25 years. I admit to liking it a bit better compared to when it was on the radio and on MTV in late 1989/early 1990. It’s still not one of my favorite songs by Babyface, but it’s not a bad song.
I watched the music video shortly before working on this writeup, and it’s the first time I’d seen it in about 25 years. I’m not entirely convinced that the circus motif really goes with the lyrics of the song, but… oh well. The version of the song that appears in the video features a rap by Bobby Brown, and Bobby also makes a cameo appearance in the video.
