“Here We Are” was released as the third single from Gloria Estefan’s 1989 album, Cuts Both Ways. The single was released on December 16, 1989, and peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
I was 14 years old and in the ninth grade when this single was released, and I fell in love with it instantly the first time I heard it on the radio. I think what grabbed me was the combination of the lyrics, Gloria’s vocal performance, and the musical arrangement. It’s a rather simple song about someone reminiscing on a past love and at the end of the song declaring that the former couple is now “just friends.” But Gloria presents a strong vocal performance that raises the song from being a simple love song to a powerful adult contemporary ballad. 25 years may have passed since this was being played in heavy rotation, but I find the song to be just as powerful now as it was back then.
The music video is a rather standard late 1980s adult contemporary video, which shows Gloria lip-synching the song in various locations. While there isn’t any truly special about this video to make it stand out, it’s still an enjoyable enough video to watch. This style of music video works well for a song like this, so I have no real complaints about it.
