“Too Late to Say Goodbye” was released as the fourth single from Richard Marx’s 1989 album, Repeat Offender. The single went on to peak at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
I was 14 years old and in the ninth grade when this single was released. At this point, I was a fan of Richard Marx’s music, so it’s not surprising that I liked this song. It’s more rock-driven and upbeat than what Richard is usually associated with. Of the five singles released from the album, it probably was the weakest, but I still enjoy the song.
The music video has an interesting concept. For portions of the video, Richard is seen driving a car; as he drives, he encounters various characters who had appeared in some of his music videos prior to this one. This portion can be thought of as a “Where are they now?” type of thing. This is intercut with footage of Richard Marx performing on stage.
