“Love Will Lead You Back” was released as the second single from Taylor Dayne’s 1989 album, Can’t Fight Fate. The single was released on January 20, 1990, and peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
I was 14 years old and in the ninth grade when this single was released. I fell in love with this ballad the first time I heard it on the radio. It’s a rather simple song, but it was a song that was able to connect with me both with its lyrics and with its musical arrangement. While it’s a song about loss, there’s still optimism in the lyrics when the speaker believes that love will lead their significant other back to them. While Taylor Dayne is usually associated more with dance material, she’s able to deliver great vocal performances on ballads. “Love Will Lead You Back” is still my favorite Taylor Dayne song of all-time, and it would also have to rank as one of my favorite ballads that was released in 1990.
The music video is also rather simple, which fits in with the more simplistic arrangement of the song. The video is in black and white, and it shows Taylor Dayne rehearsing the song with musicians and the backup singers. On the one hand, a storyline could have been interwoven with this, but I don’t think that would have made this video any stronger. The video as it is works well enough for the song.
