“Don’t Wanna Fall in Love” was released as the second single from Jane Child’s 1989 self-titled album. The single was released on February 10, 1990, and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
I was 14 years old and in the ninth grade when this single was released. This was one of those catchy songs that grabbed the listener instantly and stays stuck in their head. Fortunately, I ended up liking the song, so this wasn’t a bad thing. Unfortunately, this song ended up making Jane Child a one-hit wonder in the public eye; while the follow-up single, “Welcome to the Real World” managed to peak at number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100, that song isn’t remembered by most of the public. To be honest, I enjoy listening to “Don’t Want to Fall in Love” as much now as I did 25 years ago. I also believe that the song has aged well and doesn’t sound as dated as some of the other songs that would have been released around the same time as it was.
The music video intercuts shots of Jane in the studio with shots of her wandering around Manhattan. Whil it may sound like a relatively boring video, there was something that ultimately made this video stand out: Jane’s style. Her spiked hair with long braids, as well as her nose ring, definitely made the viewer take notice.
