“Could This Be Love” was released as the fifth single from Seduction’s 1989 album, Nothing Matters Without Love. The single was released in 1990, and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
I was 15 years old and finishing up the ninth grade when “Could This Be Love” was released. Prior to this single, all Seduction had released were upbeat dance tracks, so this was a change of pace for them. But I liked this song rather quickly after I heard it. It may be a simple ballad musically, but the lyrics are very relatable to listeners. There’s just something about the simplicity of the arrangement that adds to its appeal. It’s a song that teen girls would have been drawn to at the time, and I was no exception. And to be honest, I still enjoy this song 25 years later.
Overall, the music video is rather simple, but that fits with the simplicity of the song’s arrangement. It’s primarily the three girls in the group lip-syncing the song, which is sometimes intercut with scenes of them spending time with their significant other. I get the impression that the scenes with the significant others are supposed to be memories that the girls are having as they lip-sync the song.
