“Come Back to Me” was released as the fifth single from Janet Jackson’s 1989 album, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814. The single was released on June 18, 1990, and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
I was 15 years old and just finishing up the ninth grade when “Come Back to Me” was released. The previous four singles from the album had all been uptempo numbers, so it was nice to hear a ballad. The arrangement of the song, especially the strings, make this song stand out. Also, Janet’s vocal delivery convinces the listener that she really means what she’s singing. This heartfelt ballad about a lover trying to rekindle a romance that has faded away resonates with listeners and is very relatable.
The music video still holds up rather well today. The only issue I have is that some portions of it are a little overlit. But the overall mood and atmosphere of the video work very well with the song. A little over 25 years later, and this is still a beautiful video.
