In the U.S., “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven” was released as the fourth single from Phil Collins’ 1989 album, … But Seriously. The single was released on July 19, 1990, and peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
I was 15 years old and enjoying the summer between 9th and 10th grade when this single was released. I’d already liked the previous three singles I heard from the album, so it’s not surprising that I liked this one, too. The notable thing about this single compared to the previous three is that “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven” is an uptempo number. Musically, the song is very catchy. It also has lyrics that are easy for listeners to relate to.
The music video is very amusing, since the main star is a dog. The dog wanders into a rehearsal that Phil and his band are doing for the song. There are intercut shots of the band performing with footage as seen through the dog’s eyes or the dog interacting with the band members. It’s ultimately a fun music video that works well with this upbeat song.
